"We expected people to be excited about the truck. . . . I had no idea of the people that were going to come up and just start telling me their cancer survival stories."
The Cannoli Truck, the mobile counterpart of Meriano's Bake Shoppe in Guilford, Connecticut, launched in June of 2013 with a very special mission. After Tony and Betty Meriano were taken too soon by cancer, their children opened the truck and began donating part of the proceeds to the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Hospital. While many customers connect with the truck on an extremely personal level because of its story, they are also drawn in by the outstanding cannolis that come in a variety of unique flavors, like pumpkin and oreo--though the classic is still the most popular! All of the cannolis are filled by hand on the truck with the secret family cheese recipe, often by Andrea Meriano herself.
